La famiglia Karnowski: A Yiddish Novel by Israel J. Singer

La famiglia Karnowski is a novel by Israel J. Singer, a Yiddish writer and the brother of Nobel Prize-winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer. The novel was first published in 1943 in New York, and later translated into Italian by Elena Loewenthal in 2013. The novel tells the story of three generations of the Karnowski family, a Jewish family from Poland that moves to Berlin and faces the rise of Nazism and the Holocaust.

The novel is divided into three parts, each focusing on a different member of the Karnowski family. The first part follows David Karnowski, the patriarch of the family, who leaves his shtetl in Poland and becomes a successful doctor in Berlin. He marries a German Jewish woman, Rachel, and has two sons, Georg and Jakob. David is a secular and assimilated Jew, who rejects his religious roots and tries to fit into German society. He also has an affair with a Christian woman, Anna, who gives birth to his illegitimate daughter, Ruth.

The second part follows Georg Karnowski, David's eldest son, who inherits his father's medical practice and becomes a renowned cardiologist. He marries a non-Jewish woman, Helene, and converts to Christianity. He also joins the Nazi party and becomes a supporter of Hitler. He renounces his Jewish heritage and cuts off all ties with his family. He is unaware of the fate of his brother, Jakob, who is deported to a concentration camp and killed.

The third part follows Ruth Karnowski, David's illegitimate daughter, who grows up in an orphanage and later becomes a nurse. She is unaware of her Jewish identity and her biological father until she meets Jakob, her half-brother, who falls in love with her. They plan to escape to Palestine together, but their plan is foiled by Georg, who exposes them as Jews and sends them to their death.

La famiglia Karnowski is a powerful and tragic novel that explores the themes of identity, assimilation, betrayal, and survival. It portrays the complex and contradictory lives of the Jews in Germany before and during the Nazi era. It also shows the devastating impact of antisemitism and genocide on individuals and families.
