Underworld: Blood Wars - A Review

Underworld: Blood Wars is the fifth installment in the Underworld franchise and the sequel to Underworld: Awakening (2012). The film was directed by Anna Foerster, who made her feature film directorial debut, and written by Cory Goodman, based on characters created by Kevin Grevioux, Len Wiseman and Danny McBride. The film was released on November 24, 2016 in various countries and on January 6, 2017 in the United States. It received generally negative reviews from critics and grossed over $81 million worldwide, against its production budget of $35 million.

The film follows Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire death dealer who has been hunted by both the Lycans and the Vampires for killing Viktor, the former leader of the Vampires. She is also searching for her daughter Eve, whose blood holds the key to creating a hybrid army of vampire-werewolf hybrids. Selene is offered a pardon by the Eastern Coven, led by Semira (Lara Pulver), in exchange for her help in training their new recruits. However, Semira betrays Selene and tries to steal her blood for herself. Selene escapes with the help of David (Theo James), a loyal ally and the son of Thomas (Charles Dance), an elder of the Eastern Coven. They seek refuge at the Nordic Coven, where they learn that David is the rightful heir to the Eastern Coven and that there is a way to end the war between the Lycans and the Vampires.

The film features several action scenes, such as Selene fighting against Lycans in a frozen lake, Selene and David infiltrating the Eastern Coven to rescue their allies, and Selene confronting Marius (Tobias Menzies), the leader of the Lycans who wants to capture Eve. The film also introduces new elements to the Underworld mythology, such as the Nordic Coven, a group of peaceful vampires who have mastered a form of meditation that allows them to access a higher level of power called "the sacred world", and a ritual that can grant Selene immunity to sunlight and enhanced abilities.

The film received mostly negative reviews from critics, who criticized the plot, the acting, the dialogue, and the lack of originality. The film has a 23% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 90 reviews, with an average rating of 3.9/10. The website's critical consensus reads: "Underworld: Blood Wars delivers another round of the stylized violence that fans of the franchise have come to expect - but lacks enough originality or depth to demand any further installments." The film also has a score of 19 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 17 critics, indicating "overwhelming dislike". Some critics praised Beckinsale's performance and Foerster's direction, but most agreed that the film was a dull and unnecessary addition to the series.

The film was also a commercial disappointment, as it was the lowest-grossing film in the franchise. It grossed $30.4 million in North America and $50.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $81.1 million. The film had a production budget of $35 million, not including marketing costs. The film opened at number four at the US box office with $13.7 million, behind Hidden Figures , Sing , and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story . The film performed better overseas, especially in Russia , where it debuted at number one with $5.2 million. However, it failed to recoup its budget and was considered a flop by industry standards.

In conclusion, Underworld: Blood Wars is a disappointing sequel that fails to revive the Underworld franchise. The film offers nothing new or exciting to fans or newcomers alike, and suffers from a weak script, poor acting, and bland action. The film is only recommended for die-hard fans of Kate Beckinsale or the series, who may enjoy seeing her reprise her role as Selene one more time.
